The Prostate Health Index (phi ) Can Help Reduce Unnecessary Prostate Biopsies

The Prostate Health Index is an FDA approved blood test that can help differentiate prostate cancer from benign conditions in men with elevated PSA. If you've recently been screened for Prostate Cancer and learned you have an Elevated PSA, click the button below to find out if you're a candidate for the Prostate Health Index

Prostate Health Index Patient Selection Criteria

Male patients may be a candidate for the Prostate Index Test if they are age 50 years and older with an elevated PSA between 4ng/ml and 10ng/ml. Peer-reviewed published studies support the use of Prostate Health Index in men with total PSA values as low as 2 ng/ml (1-4)

The Prostate Health Index is included in the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Guideline for Prostate Cancer Early Detection as a blood test to improve specificity for prostate cancer detection. (5)

Who Should be Screened for Prostate Cancer?
The American Cancer Society recommends prostate cancer screening beginning at age 50 in men who are at average risk. Men who have
above average risk for Prostate Cancer should start screening at age 45. This includes African Americans and men who have a first-degree relative (father, brother, or son) diagnosed with prostate cancer younger than age 65. For men at even higher risk (more than one first-degree relative who had prostate cancer at an early age) should be screened at Age 40.

What is a PSA Test?
PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen and is a protein made only by the prostate gland. Very little PSA is found in the blood of a man with a healthy prostate. A low PSA is better for prostate health. A rapid rise in PSA may be a sign that something is wrong. One possible cause of a high PSA level is benign (non-cancer) enlargement of the prostate. Inflammation of the prostate, called prostatitis is one more common cause of high PSA levels.(6)

If you have an elevated PSA, The Prostate Health Index (phi) can help differentiate prostate cancer from benign prostate conditions.

What Benign Conditions Can Cause Elevated PSA?
In addition to prostate cancer, a number of benign (not cancerous) conditions can cause a man's PSA level to rise. The most frequent benign prostate conditions that cause an elevation in PSA level are prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) (enlargement of the prostate (6)

What are the Signs & Symptoms of Prostate Cancer?
Early prostate cancer usually causes no symptoms, which is why it's so important to get screened. According the American Cancer Society (7) more advanced prostate cancers sometimes cause symptoms, such as:
  • Problems urinating, including a slow or weak urinary stream or the need to urinate more often, especially at night
  • Blood in the urine or semen
  • Trouble getting an erection (erectile dysfunction or ED)
  • Pain in the hips, back (spine), chest (ribs), or other areas from cancer that has spread to bones
  • Weakness or numbness in the legs or feet, or even loss of bladder or bowel control from cancer pressing on the spinal cord
